Say "Aloe" to Aruba's Larimar Spa
By : Eagle Latitudes
In the past, island spas consisted of little more than a makeshift room with a single massage table and a basic menu featuring "plain Jane" massages and facials. But today's traveler is hip to the restorative properties of spas and counts premium facilities as a dealmaker when deciding on a vacation spot. These factors no doubt had an influence on the creation of the Radisson Aruba Resort's $5.2 million Larimar Spa, the island's largest relaxation spot to date. Over 40 treatments are available in the nine-room haven, whose name stems from the aqua blue-colored healing stones indigenous to the Caribbean.
The spa's locker rooms are just the beginning of the rejuvenating experience, where a hot steam room and sauna are the precursors to an invigorating dip in the icy cold plunge pool. Afterward, guests move to the peaceful outdoor courtyard waiting area outfitted with comfortable sun loungers, where they wait for their therapists.
Paying homage to the island's indigenous aloe (which has been referred to as the "plant of life") and because of the strength of the Aruban sun, several of the spa's menu items incorporate the plant. Two post-beach options are the Aruban Aloe Wrap—a skin cooling and hydrating combination of aloe and cucumber—and the soothing Aloe and Rum Massage, a signature treatment consisting of locally made Palmera rum, black beach stones, pure liquid aloe vera and lime.
Larimar has several packages, available through Dec. 18, 2008 for those seeking a spa-centered vacation. The Ladies Spa Getaway is a four-night pamper-fest that begins with a welcome martini at the Mira Solo bar and follows with a choice of three treatments. The Spa and Golf Break special also includes a four-night stay, with a choice of three activities—from spa treatments at Larimar to rounds of golf at the nearby championship Tierra Del Sol course—or a combination of both. Both packages begin at $2,195 per room, based on double occupancy.
